In the biblical Noah’s Ark account, what did Noah do immediately after leaving the ark?

The story behind the answer

In the biblical Noah’s Ark account, Noah built an altar immediately after leaving the ark.

Genesis 8 says that Noah came out with his family and the animals, then built an altar to the LORD. He offered burnt offerings from animals and birds identified in the narrative as clean. The passage presents this act as Noah’s first recorded action after the Flood.

The altar scene follows the ark’s grounding and the drying of the earth. It also precedes the covenant in which God promises that a Flood will not again destroy all living creatures, with the rainbow given as its sign. Thus the altar is part of the transition from survival to a renewed relationship between God and humanity.

This event is sometimes confused with Noah’s later vineyard. Genesis mentions the vineyard after the covenant material, so planting vines was not his first recorded activity after leaving the ark.
