In the biblical Flood narrative, what was Noah’s age when the Flood began?

The story behind the answer

Genesis says Noah was 600 years old when the waters of the Flood came upon the earth. The age appears in Genesis 7:6, shortly before the account of Noah, his family, and the animals entering the Ark.

The statement is part of Genesis’s genealogical and chronological style, which frequently records ages at major events. Earlier, Genesis identifies Noah as the father of Shem, Ham, and Japheth; later passages continue describing his life after the Flood. The age therefore anchors the Flood within the lifespan given for the biblical patriarch.

This number is sometimes confused with Noah’s age when he died, which Genesis gives as 950 years. It is also easy to mix up with the 120 years mentioned before the Flood, a separate figure in Genesis 6:3. The Flood age itself is specifically 600.
