In the Bible, who was Noah’s grandfather?

The story behind the answer

In the Bible, Methuselah was Noah’s grandfather.

Genesis 5 presents the genealogy linking Noah to Methuselah. Methuselah was the son of Enoch and the father of Lamech; Lamech was Noah’s father. That makes Methuselah Noah’s paternal grandfather.

Methuselah is especially famous for the age attributed to him: Genesis 5:27 says he lived 969 years, the longest lifespan recorded in the Bible. The genealogy places him within the generations before the Flood, although the text does not explicitly state that he died in the Flood year.

People sometimes confuse Methuselah with Lamech because both appear directly in Noah’s family line. Methuselah is Noah’s grandfather, while Lamech is his father. The genealogy also differs from later traditions and from genealogies in other ancient texts, so the answer applies specifically to the Genesis account.
