In the ancient Atrahasis Epic, what is the flood hero’s name?
Answer
Atrahasis
Answer
Atrahasis
Atrahasis is the flood hero named in the ancient Atrahasis Epic.
The Akkadian poem tells how the god Enki warns Atrahasis about a coming flood and instructs him to build a boat. Atrahasis brings living creatures and skilled people aboard, survives the disaster, and later offers a sacrifice. The account is one of the important Mesopotamian flood narratives considered in discussions of the background to later flood traditions.
The oldest known version is preserved on clay tablets from the second millennium BCE. Its story predates the standard form of the Epic of Gilgamesh, although the flood episode in Gilgamesh shares major elements with it.
Atrahasis is not another name for Noah. The characters belong to different literary and religious traditions. Their stories are compared because they share a flood, divine warning, a survival vessel, preservation of life, and a post-flood sacrifice, while differing in plot details and theology.
