In the 1979 original Alien film, the spaceship is named the Nostromo.
The commercial towing vessel USCSS Nostromo carries a seven-person crew and a cargo of mineral ore through space. The crew is awakened from suspended animation after the ship’s computer, Mother, detects a transmission from a nearby world. Investigating that signal leads to the discovery of the alien organism that threatens the crew.
Ridley Scott directed Alien from a screenplay by Dan O’Bannon and Ronald Shusett. Sigourney Weaver played Ellen Ripley, who became the franchise’s central survivor and one of science fiction’s most important protagonists. The Nostromo’s industrial design helped establish the film’s claustrophobic atmosphere.
Viewers sometimes confuse the Nostromo with later ships in the series. The Sulaco appears in Aliens, Prometheus is the research vessel in the 2012 prequel, and the Covenant is the colony ship in Alien: Covenant. Each belongs to a different story in the franchise.
