In the 2007 video game Assassin’s Creed, which Assassin is the player character?

The story behind the answer

The player character in the 2007 video game Assassin’s Creed is Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad.

Altaïr is a Syrian Assassin operating during the Third Crusade, principally in cities such as Masyaf, Damascus, Acre, and Jerusalem. His name is often rendered as Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, meaning “Altaïr, son of no one” in the series’ fictional naming convention. The game follows his fall from grace after a failed mission and his gradual restoration through a series of assassination contracts.

Altaïr is not the same character as Desmond Miles, the modern-day protagonist whose genetic memories are accessed through the Animus. Ezio Auditore becomes the central playable Assassin in Assassin’s Creed II, while Connor Kenway leads Assassin’s Creed III. Altaïr also appears in later series material, including Assassin’s Creed: Revelations, which explores his life after the first game.

The character’s signature equipment includes a hidden blade, sword, and throwing knives. His story establishes the early conflict between the Assassins and Templars that defines the broader franchise.
