Which Assassin's Creed protagonist is featured in the first game?

The story behind the answer

Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad is the protagonist featured in the first Assassin's Creed game.

Altaïr is a Syrian Assassin active during the Third Crusade. At the beginning of the game, he loses his rank after a failed mission and must regain the trust of his mentor, Al Mualim, by pursuing targets connected to the Templar Order.

His missions take him to Masyaf, Jerusalem, Acre, and Damascus. The game uses these historical locations to frame a fictional conflict involving political leaders, secret societies, and the Apple of Eden, an ancient Isu artifact.

Altaïr's story continues in later series material, including Assassin's Creed: Revelations. He is distinct from Ezio Auditore, who stars in the Italian Renaissance trilogy, and from Desmond Miles, whose modern-day perspective links the early games together.
