In the 2003 film Bad Santa, which actor plays department-store Santa Willie T. Stokes?

The story behind the answer

Billy Bob Thornton plays department-store Santa Willie T. Stokes in the 2003 film Bad Santa.

Willie is a thief who uses a department-store Santa job as part of an annual scheme. He and his accomplice, Marcus, plan to rob the stores where they work, but Willie’s relationship with a lonely child gradually disrupts his cynical routine.

Thornton’s performance gives the character a deliberately abrasive and morally flawed personality. Bad Santa is an adult black comedy, so it differs sharply in tone from family Christmas films about generosity, magic, or childhood wonder.

The film was directed by Terry Zwigoff and written by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa. Tony Cox plays Marcus, while Brett Kelly plays the child known as the Kid. The title can be confused with later films using similar antihero Santa premises, but Thornton’s Willie T. Stokes belongs specifically to the 2003 original.
