In Spyro the Dragon, Spyro can have a maximum of 99 lives.
The game’s life counter is capped at 99, so collecting additional extra-life rewards after reaching that value does not raise the displayed total beyond it. Players can earn lives during normal exploration, including through repeated collection rewards and extra-life pickups, making the cap useful for stocking up before difficult stages.
The number is often confused with 100 because 99 is the highest two-digit value, or with 9 because the counter may be displayed compactly during play. The 99-life cheat code in the original PlayStation version reinforces the same limit, but the cap is a gameplay value rather than merely a cheat effect. Lives are separate from Sparx’s health: taking damage first affects Sparx, while losing all available lives ends the game.
