In Paralympic wheelchair tennis, what is the maximum number of bounces allowed before returning the ball?

The story behind the answer

In Paralympic wheelchair tennis, the ball may bounce twice before a player returns it.

The two-bounce rule is the defining rule that separates wheelchair tennis from standard tennis. The first bounce must occur inside the court, but the second bounce may be inside or outside the court before the player hits the ball. This allows athletes additional time to reach shots while manoeuvring a sports wheelchair.

Most other tennis rules remain substantially the same. Players serve diagonally, use standard scoring and compete in singles or doubles. The wheelchair is treated as part of the player’s body for the purpose of rules governing contact with the court.

Wheelchair tennis became a Paralympic sport at Barcelona 1992. It is played by athletes in open and quad divisions, with the quad division intended for players with impairments affecting three or more limbs.
