In Paralympic wheelchair tennis, how many bounces may the ball take before it is returned?

The story behind the answer

In Paralympic wheelchair tennis, the ball may bounce twice before a player returns it.

The first bounce must occur inside the opponent’s court, as in able-bodied tennis. The second bounce may be inside or outside the court, which allows wheelchair players additional time to reach and strike the ball. A player may return the ball before the second bounce as well.

This two-bounce rule is the central playing modification in wheelchair tennis. The chair is treated as part of the player’s body, so the athlete must remain seated while playing the point. Wheelchair tennis otherwise follows the standard laws of tennis, including singles and doubles scoring.

The rule is sometimes mistakenly described as allowing two bounces anywhere. That is incorrect: the first bounce must land within the opponent’s court. Wheelchair tennis has been a Paralympic sport since Barcelona 1992.
