In Onward, Ian and Barley live in the suburban fantasy city of New Mushroomton.

New Mushroomton is the film’s modernized magical setting, where elves, centaurs, pixies, unicorns, and other fantasy beings use cars, smartphones, and convenience stores. The name combines the familiar “mushroom” imagery of fantasy worlds with the idea of a contemporary North American suburb.

The city is important because Onward contrasts a world that has largely abandoned magic with the brothers’ attempt to restore it. Ian and Barley Lightfoot begin their quest there after receiving a magical staff and a spell intended to bring their late father back for one day.
