In Mission: Impossible, what organization does Ethan Hunt work for?

The story behind the answer

In Mission: Impossible, Ethan Hunt works for the Impossible Missions Force.

The Impossible Missions Force, commonly shortened to IMF, is a fictional covert agency that gives Ethan and his teams highly dangerous assignments. The organization is inherited from the 1960s television series on which the film franchise is based. In the films, IMF agents operate with unusual independence, often assembling temporary teams for one specific mission.

The IMF name is deliberately easy to confuse with the real International Monetary Fund, which is an international financial institution. The movie agency has no connection to that organization. Ethan’s assignments typically involve espionage, infiltration, surveillance, and preventing threats to international security.

The 1996 film establishes Ethan as an IMF field agent whose team is destroyed during a mission in Prague. That setup forces him to work outside normal channels while trying to uncover the traitor responsible. Later films expand the agency’s structure and introduce directors, field teams, and competing intelligence organizations.
