In Mission: Impossible III, where does Ethan Hunt infiltrate the Vatican?

The story behind the answer

In Mission: Impossible III, Ethan Hunt infiltrates Vatican City.

The Vatican operation is designed to capture Owen Davian, an arms dealer wanted by the IMF. Ethan and his team use surveillance, disguises, forged identities, and carefully timed movements to enter the heavily protected location and extract Davian. The sequence is one of the film’s best-known examples of the franchise’s planning-and-infiltration style.

Vatican City is an independent city-state surrounded by Rome, Italy. Its status makes it distinct from simply calling the setting “Rome,” although the wider mission includes locations in and around the Italian capital. The film uses the Vatican’s recognizable architecture to give the operation a strongly identifiable setting.

The sequence is fictionalized for entertainment and should not be treated as a documentary account of Vatican security. Mission: Impossible III was directed by J. J. Abrams and released in 2006.
