In Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, which dinosaur is the Red Ranger's Zord based on?

The story behind the answer

In Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, the Red Ranger’s Zord is based on a Tyrannosaurus.

Jason Lee Scott, the original Red Ranger, pilots the Tyrannosaurus Dinozord. It is one of the five original Dinozords introduced in the series and forms the central body and head of the Dino Megazord when the team combines its machines in battle.

The other original Zords belong to different Rangers: Zack Taylor commands the Mastodon, Trini Kwan the Sabertooth Tiger, Billy Cranston the Triceratops, and Kimberly Hart the Pterodactyl. These assignments make the Red Ranger’s dinosaur especially easy to confuse with the team’s other prehistoric animals.

Jason later leaves the original team and is replaced as Red Ranger by Rocky DeSantos. Rocky also pilots the Tyrannosaurus Dinozord for a time, so the Zord is associated with the Red Ranger role as well as with Jason specifically. The Zords draw on the dinosaur-themed imagery of the Japanese Super Sentai footage adapted for the American series.
