In James Cameron’s Titanic, which ocean liner is seen in the opening wreck footage?

The story behind the answer

In James Cameron’s Titanic, the wreck footage shows the RMS Titanic.

The film opens with modern expedition footage of the sunken ocean liner before moving into the historical story of its 1912 voyage. Cameron used real underwater imagery of the wreck to establish the setting and connect the fictional romance with the actual maritime disaster.

RMS Titanic was a British passenger liner operated by the White Star Line. It left Southampton on 10 April 1912 and sank in the North Atlantic after striking an iceberg on 15 April. RMS Olympic was Titanic’s sister ship, while RMS Carpathia rescued survivors after the sinking. Those ships are sometimes confused with Titanic because they belonged to the same historical network of vessels, but the wreck shown in the film is Titanic’s.
