In James Cameron’s Titanic, what is the name of the ship’s chief designer?

The story behind the answer

Thomas Andrews is the ship’s chief designer in James Cameron’s Titanic.

Andrews was a real Irish shipbuilder and the managing director of Harland and Wolff, the Belfast firm that built Titanic. In Cameron’s film, Victor Garber portrays him as a thoughtful engineer who recognizes the seriousness of the damage after the collision and helps passengers understand the ship’s limited survival prospects.

RMS Titanic was designed as part of the Olympic class for the White Star Line. Andrews traveled on the maiden voyage to observe the ship and address any issues. He died in the sinking on April 15, 1912.

Andrews is often confused with Captain Edward Smith, who commanded the vessel, or J. Bruce Ismay, the White Star Line chairman. William Murdoch was a senior officer. Their roles were different, making Andrews the specific answer for Titanic’s designer.
