In James Cameron’s The Abyss, which actress played engineer Lindsey Brigman?

The story behind the answer

Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio played engineer Lindsey Brigman in James Cameron’s The Abyss.

Lindsey Brigman is the designer of the deep-sea drilling platform where much of The Abyss takes place. She returns to the facility after an American submarine accident and becomes involved in the investigation, working alongside her estranged husband, Virgil “Bud” Brigman, played by Ed Harris.

Mastrantonio’s performance anchors the film’s technical and emotional story. Lindsey is not simply a passenger in the crisis: her engineering expertise and knowledge of the underwater station are essential to the crew’s survival. The production’s demanding underwater work made the film especially challenging to shoot.

The Abyss was released in 1989. It combines military science fiction, underwater adventure, and relationship drama, and includes a mysterious aquatic intelligence. The film is also associated with a later Special Edition that expanded and revised parts of the story, but Mastrantonio’s role as Lindsey remains central in both versions.
