In James Cameron’s The Abyss, the underwater drilling platform is called Deepcore.
Deepcore is a mobile experimental drilling platform stationed on the ocean floor. Its crew is recruited to assist with the recovery of a damaged United States submarine, the USS Montana, after the vessel disappears near a deep underwater trench.
The platform’s confined design is central to the film’s tension. The crew must work under extreme pressure, limited oxygen, unstable machinery, and military suspicion while encountering an unexplained aquatic intelligence. Deepcore’s industrial corridors and pressurized habitats also give the film its distinctive underwater atmosphere.
Deepcore is not the name of the submarine. The USS Montana is the nuclear submarine involved in the opening incident, while Deepcore is the civilian platform used by the drilling team led by Virgil “Bud” Brigman.
