In James Cameron’s Aliens, what is the name of the colony on LV-426?

The story behind the answer

In James Cameron’s Aliens, the colony on LV-426 is called Hadley’s Hope.

Hadley’s Hope is a terraforming colony established on the moon LV-426, also known as Acheron. The colony’s inhabitants lose contact with Earth, prompting Weyland-Yutani to send a Colonial Marine unit to investigate. The colony becomes the setting for the film’s central discovery: an alien infestation.

The name is sometimes confused with Acheron, but Acheron is the moon’s alternate name, not the colony’s name. Similarly, Gateway Station is the orbital location where the Marines are briefed and awakened, rather than the settlement on the surface.

Aliens uses Hadley’s Hope to show the consequences of corporate expansion into an unknown environment. Its abandoned buildings, atmospheric processors, and colony vehicles also provide much of the film’s distinctive industrial science-fiction setting.
