In Hesiod’s Pandora myth, which god commanded the creation of Pandora?

The story behind the answer

In Hesiod’s Pandora myth, Zeus commanded the creation of Pandora.

Hesiod presents Pandora’s creation as Zeus’s response to Prometheus’s theft of fire for humanity. Zeus tells the gods to make a woman whose arrival will bring trouble to humans. Hephaestus shapes her from earth, while other gods provide qualities and adornments, making her a product of divine collaboration under Zeus’s authority.

This detail is sometimes confused with the roles of other gods. Prometheus is associated with stealing fire and protecting humanity, but he does not command Pandora’s creation. Hephaestus makes her physical form, while Hermes gives her speech and a deceptive nature in Hesiod’s version. Zeus remains the god who initiates the plan.

The story appears in Hesiod’s Works and Days and is linked to his explanation of why suffering exists among humans. Pandora is not simply an individual opening a container by accident; her arrival is part of Zeus’s punishment for Prometheus’s defiance.
