In Greek mythology, Prometheus’s gift of fire led to Pandora’s creation as punishment for humanity.
Prometheus is a Titan who is said to have stolen fire from the gods and given it to humans. In Hesiod’s account, Zeus responds by arranging a punishment that affects both Prometheus and humanity. Pandora is created as part of that response and is sent among humans carrying the sealed container.
The myth links technological knowledge with divine authority and consequence. Fire represents a major advantage for human life, but Zeus’s punishment introduces suffering and hardship into the human condition.
Prometheus’s role should not be confused with that of Epimetheus, his brother. Prometheus is associated with foresight and the theft of fire, while Epimetheus receives Pandora despite Prometheus’s warning not to accept gifts from Zeus.
