In Greek mythology, Athena helped Perseus by guiding and assisting him on his approach to the sleeping Gorgons. Her aid was central to the successful completion of his dangerous quest.
Athena gave Perseus a polished shield, allowing him to use Medusa’s reflection instead of meeting her gaze. In some versions and summaries of the story, she also directs or accompanies the hero as he finds the Gorgons. The myth therefore presents her as both a strategic adviser and a provider of essential equipment.
Perseus did not complete the quest through Athena’s help alone. Hermes supplied important gear in several traditions, and the Graeae revealed information needed to locate the Gorgons. The division of assistance differs among ancient and later accounts.
Athena’s role also connects Medusa’s story with the goddess’s aegis. After Perseus returned, Athena placed Medusa’s head on her protective armor, turning the defeated Gorgon into a lasting emblem of divine protection.
