In Greek mythology, Perseus used a harpe to cut off Medusa’s head. The harpe was a curved sword or sickle-shaped blade supplied to Perseus during his quest.
Ancient accounts connect the weapon with divine assistance. Perseus also received other objects, including winged sandals, a kibisis for carrying the head, and Hades’ helmet of invisibility. These gifts helped him approach the Gorgons and escape safely.
The harpe is sometimes confused with the sword itself in modern retellings, but the name refers specifically to the curved weapon. In broader Greek mythology, similar sickle-shaped blades appear in stories involving gods such as Cronus and Hermes.
