Dictys was the fisherman who rescued Danae and Perseus on Seriphos.
According to the Perseus myth, Danae and her infant son were placed in a chest and cast into the sea by Acrisius, king of Argos. The chest eventually reached Seriphos, where Dictys found the pair and took them in. His name is connected with fishing, fitting his role in the story.
Dictys was the brother of Polydectes, the ruler of Seriphos. Unlike Polydectes, Dictys treated Danae and Perseus kindly. Later traditions make him an important ally when Perseus returns from his mission with Medusa’s head.
Dictys is easy to confuse with Polydectes because both are connected with Seriphos. Their roles are opposites: Dictys is the rescuer and protector, while Polydectes is the king whose pressure sends Perseus on the Gorgon quest.
