In Genesis’s Noah’s Ark story, Ham saw Noah uncovered in his tent. Genesis 9:22 identifies Ham as the son who saw his father’s nakedness and told his two brothers, Shem and Japheth.
The brothers respond differently: Shem and Japheth walk backward into the tent and cover Noah without looking at him. When Noah wakes, the account continues with a pronouncement involving Canaan, Ham’s son. This passage occurs after the Flood and after Noah plants a vineyard.
The episode is often simplified in retellings, but the text distinguishes Ham from Canaan. Ham is the son who sees Noah; Canaan is the descendant named in Noah’s subsequent pronouncement. That distinction is important when answering questions about the passage’s family relationships.
