In Genesis’s Noah’s Ark story, which month did the Ark rest on the mountains of Ararat?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis’s Noah’s Ark story, the Ark rested on the mountains of Ararat in the seventh month.

Genesis 8:4 says that the Ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat on the seventeenth day of the seventh month. The verse is part of a detailed chronology that tracks the Flood’s beginning, the rise and recession of the waters, and the eventual drying of the ground.

The seventh month should not automatically be identified with a modern calendar month. Biblical calendars changed in structure and interpretation, and ancient readers did not use the modern Gregorian system. The text’s own month-and-day sequence is the secure fact.

The verse also uses “mountains” in the plural. That wording differs from popular retellings that speak simply of one mountain, usually Mount Ararat. Genesis gives a regional setting and a precise day within its narrative calendar, but not a modern geographic coordinate.
