In Genesis's Noah's Ark story, which bird first leaves the ark and keeps flying until the waters dry?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis's Noah's Ark story, the raven is the first bird sent out and keeps flying until the waters dry.

Genesis 8:6–7 says that Noah opens the ark’s window after the waters recede and sends out a raven. The bird goes back and forth, described as continuing until the waters have dried from the earth. Noah then sends a dove to test whether the ground has become visible.

The raven is often overlooked because the dove receives the story’s most memorable signs. The dove first returns because it finds no place to rest, later comes back with a freshly plucked olive leaf, and finally does not return. Those separate episodes belong to the dove sequence, not the raven’s.

The passage uses birds as practical signs of changing conditions outside the ark. It does not say that the raven brings Noah a branch or leaf; that detail belongs to the dove.
