An olive leaf
Answer
An olive leaf
In Genesis's Noah's Ark story, Noah's dove returned with an olive leaf on its second flight.
Genesis 8 says Noah sent the dove out after the raven. On its first release, the dove returned because it found no place to rest. Noah waited seven days and sent it out again; this time it came back in the evening with a freshly plucked olive leaf in its beak.
The leaf showed Noah that the waters had receded from the earth. Noah waited another seven days before sending the dove out once more, and it did not return. The sequence is therefore more precise than the common shorthand that simply says the dove brought back a branch.
The olive leaf became an enduring symbol of peace, renewal, and hope in later art and culture. In the Genesis wording, however, the specific object is an olive leaf, not a grape cluster, fig leaf, or unspecified green branch.
