In Genesis's Noah's Ark story, a raven was the first bird Noah sent out after the flood. Genesis 8 says Noah released it, and it went back and forth until the waters dried from the Earth.
Noah then sent a dove to test whether the floodwaters had receded. The dove initially found nowhere to land and returned to the ark. After a further interval, it came back with a freshly plucked olive leaf, giving Noah a more recognizable sign that vegetation was appearing.
The raven and the dove have different roles in the sequence, which is why they are frequently confused in summaries and artwork. The dove became the better-known symbol of peace and renewal, while the raven is the first bird named in the biblical account. Genesis later records Noah leaving the ark after receiving God's instruction.
