In the Noah's Ark story, the New Testament says that eight people were saved through the flood.
First Peter 3:20 describes eight persons being brought safely through water. The count corresponds to Noah, his wife, his three sons, and the three sons' wives. Genesis names Noah's sons as Shem, Ham, and Japheth and refers to their wives, although it does not provide the wives' personal names.
This total counts humans, not animals. Genesis also describes animals entering the ark, but the New Testament statement specifically concerns the people preserved through the flood.
Some readers count only Noah and his immediate family members whose names appear. That can lead to an incorrect total of four. The biblical household includes the wives of Noah and his sons, producing eight people altogether.
