In Genesis’s Noah’s Ark narrative, what was Noah’s occupation after the Flood?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis’s Noah’s Ark narrative, Noah was a farmer after the Flood.

Genesis says that Noah began to be a man of the soil and planted a vineyard after leaving the Ark. This identifies his post-Flood occupation as farming or agriculture. The passage then describes Noah drinking wine made from the vineyard, making the detail part of the narrative that follows the Flood.

Noah is often popularly imagined primarily as a shipbuilder because of the Ark story. However, Genesis does not call him a professional carpenter or shipwright. It describes the Ark’s construction but does not assign Noah that occupation as a lifelong trade.

The vineyard episode also connects Noah with the resettlement of the renewed earth. Planting crops and vineyards signals a return to cultivation and ordinary human life after the catastrophic waters have receded.
