In Genesis's Noah's Ark account, which three sons of Noah enter the ark with him?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis's Noah's Ark account, Noah's three sons are Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

Genesis names these three sons before the Flood narrative reaches its climax. Genesis 7:13 then says that Noah, his sons, his wife, and his sons' wives entered the ark. The family group therefore consists of Noah and his wife, the three named sons, and their four wives.

The names are important beyond the ark story. Genesis 10 presents a table of nations that traces peoples and territories through the lines of Shem, Ham, and Japheth. In that genealogy, the sons function as ancestors in the narrative's post-Flood account of human repopulation.

A common mix-up comes from later biblical family lists, where names such as Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, and Benjamin appear. Those figures belong to later generations and are not Noah's sons. Genesis 5:32 identifies Shem, Ham, and Japheth as Noah's sons, while Genesis 9–10 continues their story after the Flood.
