In Genesis’s Noah’s Ark account, what was the Ark’s main building material called?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis’s Noah’s Ark account, the Ark was built from a material called gopher wood.

Genesis 6:14 instructs Noah to make the Ark from “gopher wood” and to cover it inside and outside with pitch. The Hebrew expression is unusual, and the text does not identify a modern tree species with certainty. “Gopher wood” is therefore the conventional English rendering rather than a securely identified botanical name.

Translations and commentators have proposed alternatives, including cypress, cedar, and other resinous woods, but none is universally accepted as the exact meaning. This uncertainty is why the answer is best given as the biblical term itself rather than as a modern species.

The same verse also describes the Ark as divided into compartments. Its dimensions are given in cubits, making the passage a specification within the story, not a modern engineering blueprint. The Ark’s material, waterproofing, and internal layout are all mentioned before the Flood narrative begins.
