In Genesis's account of Noah's Ark, which son of Noah was the father of Aram?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis's account of Noah's Ark, Shem was the father of Aram.

Genesis 10:22 lists Shem's sons as Elam, Asshur, Arphaxad, Lud, and Aram. Shem is one of Noah's three sons, alongside Ham and Japheth. The genealogy appears after the flood narrative and is commonly called the Table of Nations because it connects descendants with peoples and regions known to the biblical authors.

Aram is associated in the biblical tradition with the Aramaeans and with Aramaic-speaking lands. The genealogy is not a modern population map, and its names can represent ancestors, peoples, or territorial traditions rather than only individual historical biographies.

Shem is also the ancestor through whom Genesis traces the line to Abram, later called Abraham. That later genealogy is one reason Shem is especially prominent in the book of Genesis. The answer is not Ham, whose listed sons include Cush, Mizraim, Put, and Canaan.
