In Genesis, who was Noah’s wife?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, Noah’s wife is unnamed.

The Genesis flood narrative mentions Noah’s wife as one of the people who entered the Ark, but it does not give her a personal name. Genesis 7:7 describes Noah entering the vessel with his sons, his wife, and his sons’ wives. The text similarly leaves the names of the sons’ wives unspecified.

Later Jewish, Christian, and Islamic traditions propose names for Noah’s wife. Naamah is a name found in some later Jewish traditions, while other sources give different names. These traditions are not names supplied by the biblical Genesis account itself, so they should not be confused with the canonical passage.

This is a useful example of the difference between a primary scriptural text and later interpretive tradition. Popular retellings often assign names to otherwise unnamed characters, but the Genesis narrative identifies this woman only by her relationship to Noah.
