In Genesis, who was Noah’s grandfather?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, Noah’s grandfather was Methuselah.

The genealogy in Genesis 5 identifies Methuselah as the son of Enoch and the father of Lamech. Lamech, in turn, became Noah’s father. This places Methuselah two generations above Noah in the genealogy that leads to the flood narrative.

Methuselah is especially famous because Genesis gives him an age of 969 years, the longest lifespan recorded in the Bible. The text says he died in the year of the flood, although the chronology can be calculated in different ways depending on how the genealogical numbers are read.

Noah’s family line is important to the story because Genesis introduces Noah through this genealogy before describing the corruption of the earth and God’s command to build the ark. Methuselah should not be confused with Lamech, Noah’s father, or Enoch, Methuselah’s father.
