In Genesis, Lamech is named as Noah’s father in the genealogy before the Ark story.
Genesis 5 places Noah in the line descending from Seth, the son of Adam and Eve. Lamech is Noah’s father, while Methuselah is Noah’s grandfather and Jared belongs to an earlier generation. These closely connected names can make the genealogy easy to mix up.
The text also records Lamech’s explanation for naming his son Noah. He connects the name with hoped-for relief from the difficult labor associated with the cursed ground. Noah later becomes the central figure in the Flood narrative.
Lamech should not be confused with another Lamech in Genesis, a descendant of Cain who appears in an earlier genealogy. The Lamech who fathers Noah belongs to the genealogy of Seth.
