In Genesis, which three sons of Noah were aboard Noah’s Ark?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, Shem, Ham, and Japheth were Noah’s three sons aboard Noah’s Ark.

Genesis names these three men in the account of the Flood and says that Noah, his sons, his wife, and his sons’ wives entered the Ark. The narrative does not give the sons equal individual roles during the construction or voyage; they are primarily identified as members of Noah’s household.

After the Flood, Genesis 9–10 continues with stories and genealogies involving Shem, Ham, and Japheth. These chapters connect their descendants with different peoples and regions in the biblical worldview.

They are sometimes confused with other famous biblical brothers or sons, especially because Genesis contains many genealogies. Cain, Abel, Seth, Isaac, Ishmael, and Jacob belong to different family episodes and are not listed as Ark passengers.
