In Genesis, which three sons of Noah left the Ark with him?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, Shem, Ham, and Japheth were the three sons of Noah who left the Ark with him.

Genesis names Noah’s sons before the Flood and later says that Noah, his sons, his wife, and his sons’ wives went into the Ark. After the waters receded, the same family group left the vessel. Their wives are included in the account, although Genesis does not name them in the Ark narrative.

The three sons become important figures in the chapters that follow. Genesis 10 presents a “Table of Nations” describing peoples and territories associated with their descendants. This makes the Ark story part of a larger genealogical account explaining the spread of nations after the Flood.

They are sometimes confused with other famous biblical brothers or with Noah’s ancestors and descendants. Shem, Ham, and Japheth are specifically Noah’s sons. Genesis also says that Noah was 500 years old when he became the father of these sons, while the Flood arrived when Noah was 600.
