In the biblical Noah’s Ark story, where did the Ark come to rest?

The story behind the answer

In the biblical Noah’s Ark story, the Ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat.

Genesis 8:4 says that the Ark rested on the mountains of Ararat on the seventeenth day of the seventh month. The wording refers to a mountainous region rather than naming one particular summit. Ararat is associated with the ancient kingdom or land of Urartu, located around parts of modern eastern Turkey, Armenia, and nearby areas.

The Bible does not say that the Ark rested specifically on the summit now commonly called Mount Ararat. That identification became especially prominent in later tradition and exploration. Several locations in the broader region have been proposed, but no archaeological discovery has been verified as the Ark.

This distinction explains why “Mount Ararat” is a familiar answer in popular culture while “the mountains of Ararat” is the more exact biblical wording. Genesis gives the regional setting and then continues with the drying of the ground and Noah’s eventual departure from the vessel.
