In Genesis 8, in which year of Noah’s life did the earth become dry?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis 8, the earth became dry in Noah’s 601st year.

Genesis 8:13 says that in the six hundred and first year, on the first day of the first month, Noah removed the covering of the Ark and saw that the ground was drying. A later verse says the earth was dry by the twenty-seventh day of the second month.

This chronology follows the earlier statement that the flood began in Noah’s 600th year. The wording allows readers to track the flood across the transition from his six-hundredth to his six-hundred-and-first year.

The 601st year is not the same as the 150 days during which the waters prevailed or the forty days of rain. Those are separate time references within Genesis’s longer account of flooding, recession, and drying.
