In Genesis, which son of Noah saw his father uncovered inside the tent?

The story behind the answer

Ham was the son of Noah who saw his father uncovered inside the tent in Genesis.

Genesis 9:20–24 says that Noah became drunk from wine, lay uncovered in his tent, and Ham saw his father’s nakedness. Ham then told his two brothers, Shem and Japheth, who covered Noah while avoiding looking at him.

When Noah awoke, the passage records a curse directed at Canaan, Ham’s son, rather than a direct curse naming Ham. This distinction is important because later readers have often referred broadly to a “curse of Ham,” even though Genesis 9:25 specifically says, “Cursed be Canaan.”

The episode is separate from the Flood itself and occurs after Noah leaves the Ark. It has a long and controversial interpretive history, including attempts to misuse it to justify racial slavery; those later claims are not stated by Genesis.
