In Genesis, which mountain range is associated with the Ark’s landing?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, the Ark is associated with the mountains of Ararat.

Genesis 8:4 says that the Ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat after the Flood. The wording is plural, so the passage does not identify one specific peak. It also does not explicitly say that the Ark rested on the modern summit commonly called Mount Ararat.

Ararat is traditionally connected with the ancient kingdom or region of Urartu, located around parts of eastern Anatolia and the South Caucasus. Over time, many explorers and traditions focused on Mount Ararat in present-day eastern Turkey, but that specific identification goes beyond the wording of Genesis.

This distinction is important because “Mount Ararat” is a familiar shorthand, while the biblical phrase is “the mountains of Ararat.” The Qur’an gives a different landing location, Mount Judi, which belongs to another textual tradition.
