In Genesis, which man is described as Noah’s father?
Answer
Lamech
Answer
Lamech
In Genesis, Lamech is described as Noah’s father.
Genesis 5:28–29 says that Lamech lived for 182 years and fathered a son whom he named Noah. Lamech explains the name by expressing hope that the child would bring relief from the painful labor caused by the ground’s curse.
This Lamech belongs to the genealogy descended from Seth and is different from the Lamech in Genesis 4, who appears in the line of Cain. The two men share a name but are presented in separate genealogical traditions and have different family connections.
Noah’s grandfather in the Genesis genealogy is Methuselah, while Seth is an earlier ancestor. Separating these similarly named figures is important because biblical genealogies can place related names close together while still distinguishing separate branches of the family.
