According to Genesis, Noah first released a raven from the Ark. Genesis 8:7 says Noah sent out the raven after the waters began to recede.
The raven flew back and forth until the waters had dried from the earth. Noah then sent out a dove to test whether the ground was clear. The dove returned because it found nowhere to rest, and later returned with a freshly plucked olive leaf. On a subsequent release, it did not return.
This sequence is often compressed in retellings, which may cause readers to remember only the dove. The raven and the dove serve different roles in the narrative: the raven is the first bird sent out, while the dove provides the more familiar signs used to track the retreat of the waters. This question concerns the order of release, not the bird that returned with a leaf.
