In Genesis, what was the name of Noah’s first named son?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, Noah’s first named son is Shem.

Genesis 5:32 lists Noah’s sons as Shem, Ham, and Japheth, placing Shem first in the biblical list. All three sons and their wives are described as entering the Ark with Noah during the Flood. Shem later receives particular genealogical importance in Genesis.

Genesis 10 associates peoples and territories with Noah’s sons in the Table of Nations. Later biblical genealogies trace Abraham’s line through Shem, which is why the term “Semitic” was historically connected to the name, although modern scholars use language-family classifications more carefully than older racial terminology.

The order in the list does not necessarily establish every detail of birth chronology in all interpretations. Nevertheless, “Shem” is the canonical first name in Genesis’s presentation of Noah’s sons, while Ham and Japheth are the other two named brothers.
