In Genesis, what was the first month in which Noah saw the mountaintops?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, Noah first saw the mountaintops in the tenth month.

Genesis 8:5 says that the waters continued to decrease until the tops of the mountains appeared in the tenth month. The verse gives the month but does not name it with a modern calendar label, so “the tenth month” is the precise answer supported by the text.

This event occurs after the Ark comes to rest on the mountains of Ararat in the seventh month. Noah then waits forty days before opening the window and sending out the raven. The sequence therefore includes several distinct dates and waiting periods.

Readers sometimes answer with the seventh month because that is when the Ark is said to rest, or with the first month because later verses describe the earth drying. Those are different milestones. The tenth month specifically marks the appearance of the mountain tops above the receding waters.
