In Genesis, what was the Ark’s window raised above its roof by?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, the Ark’s window was raised one cubit above the roof.

Genesis 6:16 includes a brief architectural instruction that is often translated as making a window or opening and finishing it to a cubit above. The verse also mentions a door in the side and three levels inside the Ark. Together, these details are among the few construction specifications in the Flood narrative.

Translations differ in how they describe the opening because the underlying Hebrew wording is difficult and has been interpreted in more than one way. Some render it as a window, while others emphasize a skylight or opening. The measurement associated with it is nevertheless commonly given as one cubit.

This detail is easy to confuse with the Ark’s overall height of 30 cubits. One cubit refers to the raised opening, not the height of the vessel.
