In Genesis, Noah’s father was named Lamech.
Genesis 5:28–29 identifies Lamech as the father of Noah. Lamech gives his son the name Noah and explains it in connection with hoped-for relief from the painful labor associated with the ground. This genealogy places Noah within the line descending from Seth, Adam and Eve’s son named earlier in Genesis.
Lamech should not be confused with another biblical Lamech in Genesis 4, who belongs to the line of Cain. The two figures share a name but appear in different genealogical lines and different narratives. Noah’s father is the Lamech in the Sethite genealogy of Genesis 5.
Methuselah was Noah’s grandfather, according to that same genealogy. Keeping Lamech, Methuselah, and Noah in their generational order prevents a common mix-up when following the family background of the Ark story.
